It is not breaking news that triangle houses are the new hype for a few years now: Airbnb has even been featuring A frame houses on their homepage for months.
While big resorts are rejected because of their lack of customization and character, renting triangle houses or A frame houses, cabins and tiny houses is definitely the new trend.
You might have seen them on social media, triangles houses have been popping up in Siargao island like flowers in spring since 2017.
Four years ago, in the heart of General Luna, the first triangle house rose from the ground, and not just any triangle house: a design led sustainable A frame house of 80 square metres (861 square feet), with roof reaching 7 meters (almost 23 feet).
And of course it came with its own challenges as all the local contractors and engineers never saw a house design that didn’t have four walls in a square and a roof. However, intrigued and curious about the project, an audacious local contractor took on our project with all his heart and formed the perfect team of local workers and carpenters.
This unique triangle house design is remarkable by its space and its massive triangle shaped windows. It’s a real focus of the house’s design and these windows bring an extraordinary view over the lush garden and the coconut trees, in addition to bringing natural light over the mezzanine and room. The majestic roof, entirely made of nipa, a typical roofing style from the Philippines, totally blends with the surrounding nature.
The Triangle Siargao was the pionneer of many more a frame house designs on Siargao island.
By the end of 2018, just a kilometer away from the Triangle Siargao, these three little triangle houses were born in General Luna. The owner, inspired by the design of our Triangle house Siargao, created pretty triangle houses, using local materials such as amakan : woven split-bamboo, for the walls. Thanks to these materials, their triangle houses have a very local and natural style. The interior design is more modern, with white walls that brighten up the room as there’s only one window on this a frame house.
Indeed, it is also in November 2018 that bigger triangles houses starting to pop up in Siargao island, but this time, in the barangay of Malinao. Much bigger than the Triangle Palms budget triangle houses, Dahun villas did a remarkable job with the roof: in order to protect the house from the rain, the roof was extended a few meters on the front. The front of the house is entirely made of windows, shaped in triangles and inspired by our Triangles Siargao. However smaller, the room inside feels cosy, with wooden floors and amakan walls, even if the space under the roof is a bit short.
After 9 months of intense build, and based on the original triangle house design, the Triangle Sister House Siargao emerged in january 2019. This upgraded version of 120 square meters (1292 square feet) is wider and includes two separate rooms. Our architect has been working on the air circulation and created a perfect house design where air flows naturally in the space. Thanks to the high ceiling volume, the Triangle sister has a large yoga deck located on the mezzanine, facing the garden. The living room area, with a central kitchen island, was designed to welcome groups of people and becomes the focal point when entertaining.
While building the Triangle Sister House at The Triangles Siargao, we met Cara and Marco. They wanted to settle down in Siargao and build their little piece of paradise.
They visited the Triangle Sister House mid construction and were totally amazed by our house design. Just a few months later, inspired by their visit to the Triangles Siargao, they built their cute guest house, Mao Mao. Their white A frame cabanas made of wood and nipa have totally captured the beach vibes.
As the island of Siargao is developing, the tourist areas are growing and the north of the island is becoming increasingly popular. Pacifico, located on the north east coast of the island quickly became the peaceful place to escape the busy streets of General Luna. Indeed the Pacifico area is much quieter and has seen less development meaning there are less places to eat and sleep. Amongst them is Asana Siargao, which created a peaceful environment and some very pretty triangle houses. They managed to design the cabanas so that there’s natural light coming in from the lovely triangle windows both at the front and at the back of the house.
Just a few weeks ago as we write this article, this multi-brand filipino owned lifestyle store just opened its Siargao branch, and hosted no less, in a gracious A frame house! A sleek design, with large window panels integrated on the roof to bring a considerable amount of natural light in the space. On the front, the large triangle shaped windows are definitely a tribute to the Triangles Siargao and it’s beautiful. The final white touches give this triangle house a really stylish and beachy look!
We are very proud to have brought the A frame design and the triangle houses to the tropical location we have in Siargao island. It is without doubt that we can say this particular house design blends perfectly in the surrounding nature.
We’re very excited to see what’s coming next as we are launching the Triangle network : a community of design led A frame houses in beautiful and rare locations.
